How Long Does IHSS Take in California?
Updated September 22, 2026. Reviewed September 22, 2026 against the official sources linked on this page. County wages, hours, and wait times still change. Official .gov pages decide.
How long IHSS takes in California depends on the county. Families wait on Medi-Cal, a complete packet, a worker, the visit, notice, and enrollment. We do not publish wait days.
About 10 minutes to read. Based on the official pages linked below, reviewed September 22, 2026. County offices apply IHSS rules. Hourly rates, hour totals, and wait times are local and change.
Short answer
California does not publish one statewide IHSS wait. After you apply, the county still has to confirm Medi-Cal, a complete packet, a worker, a home visit, and a Notice of Action. Provider enrollment, Live Scan, timesheets, and Electronic Visit Verification sit beside that sequence. The first State warrant comes only after authorized time is accepted, and a Medi-Cal share of cost can change what arrives. County timing varies. We do not publish wait days.
Who decides
Your county IHSS office assigns the worker, schedules the home visit, and issues the Notice of Action. Medi-Cal staff decide whether coverage is pending or approved, and whether a share of cost applies. Ask that county what is typical locally.
What to do next
Call the county IHSS office once to confirm the packet is complete, keep a copies log, start provider enrollment if you will give the care, and write typical-day notes for the home visit.
County timing varies, and we do not publish wait days
If you are an adult child who just filed for a parent, the quiet stretch is the part that feels personal. You did the form. The house still needs help. Nobody has called. That silence is common, and it is not a number this site can fill in. CDSS administers In-Home Supportive Services statewide. The county where your parent lives runs the case. Two neighboring counties can move at different speeds in the same month. A cousin's story from last year is not a forecast.
This page is the waiting map: what each stage is waiting on, what you can usefully do, and what does not help. What happens after you apply is the sequence once SOC 295 is in. How to apply for IHSS in California and the step-by-step apply guide are the filing path. Helping a parent apply is the adult-child version of that start. Hours and assessment expectations explains the visit without inventing a weekly total. County pages live on the county hub. None of those pages, and not this one, publish wait days.
Official rules live on CDSS IHSS, the county office list, BenefitsCal, and DHCS Medi-Cal. If you want a person to sit with the packet while those offices do their work, you can ask for help. That is paperwork help. The county still decides the case.
Stage: Medi-Cal is still pending
IHSS is a Medi-Cal home care program. A Medi-Cal eligibility determination has to exist before the county can finish the IHSS case. Some counties will take the IHSS application while Medi-Cal is still pending. That is a filing courtesy, not a finished case. If you only watch the IHSS phone line, you can miss the Medi-Cal item that is actually holding the file.
Check BenefitsCal or ask the Medi-Cal worker whether the determination is pending, approved, or asking for another page. DHCS explains how to apply for Medi-Cal. Do not invent an income limit on this page. Do not assume a hospital discharge made Medi-Cal automatic. If a monthly share of cost might apply, ask Medi-Cal now so the first warrant is not a surprise later. The share of cost guide and the CDSS fact sheet explain the mechanism without a dollar amount.

Questions people ask
- How long does IHSS take in California?
- There is no statewide number of days. County timing varies. The case still has to clear Medi-Cal, a complete packet, worker assignment, a home visit, and a Notice of Action. We do not publish wait days. Ask your county IHSS office what is typical locally.
- How long after I apply does the social worker visit?
- The visit waits on a usable application and on someone being assigned. Some counties accept SOC 295 while Medi-Cal is still pending. The IHSS case still cannot finish until Medi-Cal is decided. Call once to confirm the file is complete, then wait for the scheduled visit unless the office asks for something else.
- What can we do while we wait that actually helps?
- Make one confirmation call, keep a copies log, start provider enrollment if you will give the care, and write typical-day notes. Sending extra hospital records nobody asked for, calling every day, or quoting another household's timeline does not move the file.
- When does the first State warrant arrive?
- After hours are authorized, the provider is enrolled, and timesheets are accepted, including Electronic Visit Verification when it applies. If a Medi-Cal share of cost applies and was unpaid, that amount can be deducted from the warrant. This page does not quote a payday or a wage.
