Keep the week small enough to finish
The first week of helping a parent stay home is easy to overload. People try to learn every IHSS rule, call every office daily, and enroll as a provider before Medi-Cal is confirmed. A calmer order works better: coverage, application, medical certification, provider decision, listing. The families page uses that sequence. This guide is the week-one version.
You gather. The county decides. Nothing in this week is a promise about when a worker will visit or when a warrant will arrive. Your county office can tell you what is typical locally.
Day-by-day, without inventing a timetable
- Confirm your parent lives in California in a home they choose, and write the address the county should use.
- Check Medi-Cal. If it is missing, start BenefitsCal or the county Medi-Cal office. Ask whether a share of cost applies.
- If there is no IHSS case, submit SOC 295 to the county IHSS office.
- Get SOC 873 to a licensed health professional and ask how it returns to the county.
- Ask how you can be listed so staff can speak with you.
- Decide whether you will be the provider. If yes, open enrollment.

- What if I cannot do every form this week?
- Do Medi-Cal and SOC 295 first if those are open. SOC 873 can travel to the clinician as soon as you have the blank. Provider enrollment can start when the provider decision is clear.
- Should I wait for the social worker before I enroll?
- You can start enrollment when you know you will give the care. The assessment and the provider packet are different queues. Ask the county how they prefer those to overlap.
- Is this week different after a hospital stay?
