Can I Get Paid to Care for a Parent in the Bay Area?

In-Home Supportive Services is the California Department of Social Services program that can pay an enrolled provider for tasks a social worker authorizes so an eligible parent can stay in a home they choose. An adult child is commonly allowed after enrollment
CDSS says IHSS providers may include family members after they finish enrollment. An adult child of an adult recipient is in that ordinary group. You still complete county provider orientation, SOC 426, the provider agreement (SOC 846), and a Department of Justice background check where required. You must be authorized to work in the United States. Adult children as providers is the statewide version of this sentence.
A spouse, or a parent of a child under 18, follows tighter sub-program rules (PCSP versus CFCO, IPO, or IHSS-Residual). Those exceptions do not turn an adult child into a special Bay Area category. The parent’s case still has to finish
Enrollment does not create hours. Your parent needs a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, an IHSS application (SOC 295), a Health Care Certification (SOC 873) or acceptable alternative documentation, and an in-home assessment. The recipient is still the employer
If you become the paid provider, your parent (or their authorized representative) hires you, trains you on how they want the work done, and can end the arrangement. The State issues the provider payment for authorized time after timesheets are accepted. Living in a Bay Area county does not change that employer relationship. Family roles when a parent is the employer is the companion if siblings are arguing about who is in charge.

Moving within California is a different story
If the parent already has IHSS in another California county and is moving into a Bay Area county, that is a transfer between counties, not a first-time “Bay Area program.” Moving counties with IHSS is that path. If the parent is moving to California from another state, Medi-Cal has to start here first: moving an elder to California.
