Changing an IHSS Provider in California

The recipient chooses the individual provider

CDSS says the recipient generally hires, trains, supervises, and can end the individual provider relationship. If you are an adult child, that means your parent is usually the employer even when you are the one who found the helper. A change of provider is their decision, recorded with the county, not a sibling vote. Coordinating siblings helps you keep that line clear.

Providers may include family members, friends, neighbors, or someone from a county Public Authority list, after enrollment. Adult children are commonly allowed. A spouse, or a parent of a child under 18, depends on the IHSS sub-program. Ask the county which program applies before you plan a paid spouse or a paid parent-of-a-minor. Tell the county both names

1. Write the current provider’s name and provider number if you have it.
2. Write the new person’s legal name as it will appear on enrollment forms.
3. Ask the county IHSS office or Public Authority how to end or remove the current provider on the case.
4. Ask which packet the new person uses: orientation, SOC 426, provider agreement, and a Department of Justice background check where required.
5. Ask when the old provider should stop timesheeting and when the new provider may start.
6. Ask whether EVV accounts must be closed or opened.
