When a Relative Moves In to Give Care

It does not automatically add hours. The home still has to count as the recipient's own home. Tell the county the new household. County Medi-Cal may also need the updated living arrangement.

Moving in is a household change, not a new IHSS product
A family helping a parent stay home sometimes decides an adult child or grandchild should move in. That can make daily help possible. It is not a special IHSS enrollment called 'live-in hours.' The county still authorizes listed tasks. Eligibility still requires Medi-Cal, own home, SOC 873, and an assessment.
Tell both the IHSS office and the Medi-Cal office. Household composition can matter for MAGI or non-MAGI counting. Live-in wages and MAGI is the income caution. This page is the move-in situation.
Own home is still the recipient's setting
IHSS is for people living at home or in an abode of their own choosing. A relative moving in does not automatically convert the place into a facility, and it does not automatically fail own home. Unusual leases, unlicensed board-and-care arrangements, or a move into a setting the county treats as community care are the times to ask before you assume IHSS continues.
If the recipient is moving into the relative's home in a new county, that can be a county transfer or, if they came from another state, a new Medi-Cal then IHSS path. Moving counties and moving an elder to California are those orders.

- If I move in, do we get more IHSS hours?
- No, not automatically. Hours come from the assessment of the recipient's functional need. A new roommate who can help may even change how some domestic tasks are viewed. Ask the social worker. Do not treat moving in as a raise.
- Does the recipient lose own-home status if I move in?
- Sharing a home with family can still be own home when the recipient lives in an abode of their choosing. A hospital or licensed facility is the setting that fails the rule. Ask the county if the new arrangement is unusual (for example, the relative's name is the only lease).
- Do I have to complete SOC 2298 the week I arrive?
- SOC 2298 is live-in self-certification for an enrolled provider. Ask the county whether you should complete it and how EVV changes. It does not replace SOC 426.
- Two of us moved in. Can we both be paid?
- Each person who wants to be a provider enrolls separately. The notice still sets authorized hours. Living together does not create a second hour pool.
