How IHSS Timesheets Work in California

A timesheet is a record of authorized work, not a diary of the household

The first timesheet is where adult children often freeze. They have been helping for months. The notice lists tasks. The Public Authority mentioned ESP or an app. The temptation is to write down every hour you were in the house. That is not what the program pays. IHSS pays authorized time you actually provided, recorded the way the county asks, after you are enrolled.

Keep the Notice of Action next to whatever screen or phone method you use. If the notice authorizes help with bathing and meals, those are the categories you are recording. Companionship, watching television in the same room, and ordinary family time are not a timesheet line unless they are part of an authorized task the worker wrote down (for example, protective supervision when it is authorized).

The three pieces behind a payable timesheet

1. The recipient’s case has authorized hours. No notice, no payable time.
2. You finished provider enrollment: orientation, SOC 426, SOC 846, and a background check where required.
3. You used the EVV method the county assigned, including different steps if you are a live-in SOC 2298 provider.

When pay starts is the meeting of those pieces. Submitting a timesheet is how the State sees the third piece. The recipient as employer still hires and can fire you; they also complete the approval the method requires.
