When adult children ask whether Medi-Cal pays for home care, they usually mean a helper in the house. In California that helper is often an IHSS individual provider, frequently an adult child, paid for tasks a county social worker authorizes. Other DHCS options exist: Community-Based Adult Services, the Multipurpose Senior Services Program, PACE, and waivers. Service areas, wait lists, and overlap rules are local.

Do not assume every option can run at once. PACE, for example, is an all-inclusive model in its service area. Ask each program whether another benefit can sit beside it.

Start with Medi-Cal itself

IHSS builds on a Medi-Cal eligibility determination. Apply or check status through BenefitsCal or the county Medi-Cal office. Some cases have a monthly share of cost. Unpaid share of cost can affect the provider warrant. The county can walk through the numbers. This site will not invent an income limit.
