Live Scan and Background Checks for New IHSS Providers

Fingerprints are a provider queue

The IHSS background check guide explains why many providers complete a DOJ criminal history review. This page is the new-provider, Live Scan version of that step: you have decided to enroll, the county named a fingerprint site, and you need to know that this clock is not the home visit. CDSS lists a Department of Justice background check among enrollment pieces. Families hear “background check” and picture the social worker glancing around the living room. That is not this appointment.

Start Live Scan when you know you will give the care, the same week you ask about orientation. Waiting until the notice arrives is a common reason the first authorized days have no payable provider. Timing is local. The county can tell you what is typical. This page will not invent a number of days.

Ask which site and which packet

• Which Live Scan operator, county window, or vendor they want you to use.
• Which form or originating agency information to take so the results route to IHSS.
• Which photo identification to bring.
• Whether they name a fee, and how that fee is paid at the site.
• How you will know the county received a result.

Do not pick a random fingerprint shop from a search and hope the result lands on the case. Do not skip the county’s routing instructions. Use the CDSS county list if you do not know which Public Authority to ask.

Who completes it

Each person who wants to be paid is reviewed as themselves, including an adult child, another relative, a friend, or a registry hire. A clean result for one sibling does not cover another. You must also be authorized to work in the United States. Work authorization and the DOJ check are related enrollment facts, not the same stamp. If two family members will share hours, both complete the check where required.

How this meets pay

The State pays enrolled providers for authorized time. A finished recipient notice does not replace an unfinished provider background check. Enrollment steps and when pay starts stay in that order. If you are switching family providers, the incoming person starts this queue even if the outgoing person already cleared it years ago. Giving care during the fingerprint wait is still family help until the county says that person is payable. Ask them when paid time can begin rather than guessing from the appointment receipt.

If a result needs a follow-up

Sometimes a county asks for more information. That conversation is with the office that runs enrollment, using the process they name. This page does not interpret criminal history or predict an outcome. Ask what they need, keep copies, and do not send the recipient’s medical file in reply unless they asked for a named page.

Official enrollment sources

If the site sends you away for missing paperwork, call the Public Authority before you book another slot. Ask whether the result is mailed, posted, or only visible to the county. Keep the receipt they give you with the enrollment packet. A lost receipt is a delay you can avoid.

Follow CDSS providers, orientation, and your county office. Adult children, friends, and registry hires use the same fingerprint path where required. If you want help keeping Live Scan on the same calendar as orientation and SOC 426, ask for help. The county still processes the provider file.
