Live Scan and Background Checks for New IHSS Providers

The county IHSS office applies state provider enrollment and background-check rules. The county and Medi-Cal still decide the recipient’s hours. Pay waits until enrollment, including this step where required, is finished.

Fingerprints are a provider queue

The IHSS background check guide explains why many providers complete a DOJ criminal history review. CDSS lists a Department of Justice background check among enrollment pieces. Families hear “background check” and picture the social worker glancing around the living room. That is not this appointment.

Start Live Scan when you know you will give the care, the same week you ask about orientation. Waiting until the notice arrives is a common reason the first authorized days have no payable provider. Timing is local. The county can tell you what is typical. This page will not invent a number of days.

Ask which site and which packet

  • Which Live Scan operator, county window, or vendor they want you to use.
  • Which form or originating agency information to take so the results route to IHSS.
  • Which photo identification to bring.
  • Whether they name a fee, and how that fee is paid at the site.
  • How you will know the county received a result.

Do not pick a random fingerprint shop from a search and hope the result lands on the case. Do not skip the county’s routing instructions. Use the CDSS county list if you do not know which Public Authority to ask.

Questions people ask

Is Live Scan the same as orientation?
No. Orientation is the required briefing. Live Scan or DOJ fingerprinting is the criminal-history step. Counties often run them in the same season on different clocks.
Can I use a fingerprint report from another job?
Ask the county. The program usually wants its own DOJ process. Do not mail a private report to CDSS headquarters and assume it attached.
Does living with my parent skip Live Scan?
Live-in status changes EVV steps when you self-certify on SOC 2298. It does not, by itself, cancel a required background check. Ask which steps apply.
Will the social worker wait for my fingerprints before visiting?
The assessment authorizes tasks for the recipient. The background check is the provider file. They do not finish each other. Ask locally how they sequence pay.
