Authorized IHSS Tasks versus Companionship

The notice is the task list that counts

What IHSS personal care covers walks through bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and related help. Household tasks, accompaniment to certain appointments, paramedical services, and protective supervision are other categories the program may authorize. Your Notice of Action is the only list that counts for this person. The coverage page is education. It is not a second authorization.

A composite afternoon: an adult child helps with a shower, prepares a meal, then sits at the table because leaving feels unkind. The authorized pieces are the tasks the notice named. The sitting, if it is only company, is usually not IHSS. Recording the whole afternoon as if it were one service is how timesheets get into trouble. Ask the worker how they want mixed time described at the visit, then record claimed time the way EVV and the notice require. When in doubt, ask before the first timesheet of a new week.

What companionship usually means here

Companionship, in family language, is presence: conversation, watching television, being in the house so someone is not alone. Those wants are real. IHSS is not designed as a visiting program. CDSS and county assessments tie hours to function: what the person cannot safely do alone, and which listed services the worker authorizes. If the only need you can describe is “someone to sit,” ask the worker how that is treated. Do not assume it becomes paid time.

Memory-related risk is not the same as loneliness. Memory changes and the assessment explains how to describe stove, medication, and wandering facts. The county still decides whether any supervision category applies. Do not relabel ordinary company as that category.
