Respite for Family Caregivers in California

Updated September 16, 2026. Reviewed September 16, 2026 against public CDSS, DHCS, Medicare.gov, VA, and CareScout 2025 California tables. County wages, hours, and wait times still change. Official .gov pages decide.

IHSS is not the same as respite. How California Caregiver Resource Centers, MSSP, CBAS, private home care, and county programs may give an adult child a break.

Based on public CDSS, DHCS, Medicare.gov, VA, and California Department of Insurance pages retrieved 2026-09-16. County, Medi-Cal, Medicare, VA, and insurer staff decide what actually pays. Hourly rates, hour totals, waiver slots, and wait times are local and change.

Short answer

IHSS pays an enrolled provider for authorized tasks so the recipient can stay home. It is not designed as a vacation benefit for the family caregiver, even when that caregiver is the provider. California does fund other respite-shaped help through Caregiver Resource Centers, some MSSP and CBAS arrangements, private home care, and local aging programs. Each has its own eligibility. Ask those offices. Do not treat an IHSS hour total as paid time off.

Who decides

County IHSS staff authorize IHSS tasks. Caregiver Resource Centers, MSSP sites, CBAS centers, and private agencies decide their own respite or day services. This site does not award respite hours.

What to do next

Call the Caregiver Resource Center for your area, ask the county what else sits next to IHSS, and read the longer respite-versus-IHSS guide before you rearrange timesheets.

IHSS cares for the recipient. Respite cares for the caregiver.

That split is why people get angry at a notice. IHSS can look like it should include a break. CDSS designed it as in-home services for the eligible person. If you need someone else to give the authorized care so you can rest, that is usually a second provider, a county model, or a different program. Read respite care versus IHSS.

Sharing hours across providers is the IHSS-shaped version of a break: another enrolled person does authorized tasks. Workweek and overtime rules still apply. Use official CDSS overtime pages, not a group chat.

Where California actually funds caregiver relief

  • Caregiver Resource Centers, through the California Department of Aging
  • MSSP in participating areas, which can coordinate extra supports
  • CBAS day services for eligible Medi-Cal members
  • Local Area Agency on Aging programs you find through CDA’s county search
  • Private licensed home care for hours you purchase

Capacity and wait lists are local. This page will not invent a voucher amount.

If dementia or Parkinson’s is the reason you cannot leave

Protective supervision, if authorized, is still about the recipient’s unsupervised risk. It is not a finding that you deserve a weekend. Combine the dementia page with a CRC call. If you are considering a facility so you can sleep, read how to pay for memory care before you sign.

Soft next step

If the blocker is county paperwork, ask California Home Help. If the blocker is that you have not slept, call the Caregiver Resource Center this week even if the IHSS file is already in motion. Sevah’s home care team is optional if you later want to talk about licensed help at home.

Questions people ask

Can I use IHSS hours so I can go to work or take a trip?
IHSS hours are for authorized care of the recipient. Sharing hours across providers is a county conversation. It is not a personal PTO bank. See sharing hours and workweek guides.
What is a Caregiver Resource Center?
A California Department of Aging-supported network that helps family caregivers with education, support, and some short-term services. It is not the IHSS payroll office.
Can CBAS give me a day off?
Community-Based Adult Services is a DHCS day program for eligible Medi-Cal members. It can create daytime structure for the recipient. Enrollment is local. Ask DHCS and the center.
Is hiring an agency for a weekend respite?
Privately, yes, if you pay a licensed organization. Confirm the license. That hire does not change IHSS authorization by itself.

See if IHSS may apply

A coordinator can walk through Medi-Cal, county forms, and the home visit with you. The county still decides eligibility and hours.

For example: starting an IHSS application, provider enrollment, or county forms. Keep medical records and diagnoses for the county packet.
