IHSS Provider Orientation in California

Orientation is the required briefing, not a class you shop for

CDSS publishes an orientation process for IHSS providers. Counties and Public Authorities run it. The point is to tell the person who wants to be paid how individual-provider rules work: the recipient as employer, authorized tasks, timesheets, EVV when it applies, and the enrollment forms that go with the session. It is not a skills class in bathing, and it is not the in-home assessment.

You ask the local office which session they use because formats differ. Some counties use a scheduled in-person meeting. Some use another format they will describe on the phone. This site will not invent a statewide calendar or a number of seats. The CDSS orientation page is the statewide description. The county office list is how you reach the people who book it.

Why it is required before pay

Enrollment includes orientation. A provider who has not completed the county’s required session is not finished. Help you already give is still family help until enrollment and authorized timesheets are in place. When pay starts waits on the whole file. Orientation is the step people postpone because they “already know how to care for Mom.” Knowing how to care is not the same as being enrolled.

Bring whatever the Public Authority says to bring. That may include identification for the rest of the packet. Complete SOC 426 and SOC 846 on the timeline they give you. Do not assume the session files those forms for you unless they say they will collect them there.
